A stopped control screen is not energy isolation. Plate rolls can retain electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, spring, rotational and gravitational energy. If a test requires temporary re-energization, clear tools and people, follow the approved test sequence, then de-energize and reapply the controls before maintenance continues.
- Never bypass an interlock, emergency stop, guard or protective device to keep production running.
- Never rely on a hydraulic valve alone to support an elevated roll, drop end or workpiece.

What the Checklist Must Cover
Rolls, Bearings and Alignment
The working rolls contact the plate directly, while bearings support the rolls and drive shafts and reduce friction during rotation.
Track roll-surface damage, material buildup, corrosion, bearing temperature/noise and changes in parallelism. A polished roll can still be worn or crowned incorrectly, so part-quality records are part of the maintenance evidence.
Drive, Gears, Shafts and Couplings
Gears, shafts and couplings transmit motor torque to the working rolls.
Inspect lubrication, backlash, fasteners, guards, seals, vibration, temperature and abnormal sound. The permitted backlash and lubricant belong to the machine manual, not a generic checklist.
Hydraulic System
Inspect oil level, temperature, color or odor change, leakage, hoses, pipes, fittings, cylinders, filters and pressure indications. Take oil samples using a clean method when the service plan calls for analysis. Replace oil or filters by the manual, analysis and contamination condition rather than a fixed calendar rule alone.
Electrical and Control System
The electrical system supplies motors and hydraulic actuators and uses the control panel, PLC, sensors and limit devices to command movement.
Operators can check normal indications and function. Only qualified electrical personnel should open cabinets, torque terminals, test insulation, replace components, edit protected parameters or verify safety circuits.
Frame, Drop End, Supports and Handling
Inspect the base, frame welds, anchor points, drop-end locking, balancing device, side/overhead supports and loading equipment for looseness, deformation, cracks, collision damage and abnormal movement. Large shells put changing loads into these systems even when the roll train appears normal.
Daily or Each-Shift Checks
- Remove loose scale, chips, dust and oil from approved areas with the machine stopped; keep debris out of the roll bite and hydraulic breathers.
- Inspect roll surfaces and the incoming plate for dents, burrs, weld spatter, rust scale or embedded debris.
- Check visible hydraulic level and look for fresh leaks, damaged hoses, rubbing lines or unusual oil temperature.
- Listen for new bearing, gearbox, pump or coupling noise and note unusual vibration or heat against the normal baseline.
- Function-check emergency stops, guards, interlocks, limit devices and approved operator controls according to the site procedure.

- Compare the first acceptable part with recent results; unexpected diameter, taper or tracking drift can be an early maintenance signal.

Weekly Checks
- Inspect accessible bearing locations, roll ends and seals for leakage, contamination, looseness and temperature trend.

Stop the Machine and Escalate When
- A guard, interlock, emergency stop, limit device or drop-end lock does not function as designed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should hydraulic oil be changed?
There is no universal yearly answer. Follow the machine and oil supplier specifications, service conditions, contamination indicators and oil-analysis results. Correct the source of contamination before filling new oil.
Can an operator lubricate the machine while it is running?
Only if the manufacturer designed a specific safe lubrication point and the site procedure allows it. Otherwise isolate hazardous energy before entering any danger zone.
What is the first sign of roll misalignment?
The part may begin to track sideways, show taper or require different left/right settings. Confirm material and setup before concluding that the rolls themselves are misaligned.
Should every fastener be retightened on a schedule?
